The book offers a brief introduction to the fields of Cultural Studies, Trauma Studies, Literary Studies and Comic Studies. It attempts to provide a brief overview of graphic novels and, in particular, a historical review of Holocaust graphic novels. The variety and fluidity of adaptation of this category of graphic novels make it an evolving branch of Holocaust representation, establishing an innovative means of capturing cultural memory. This particular category of graphic novels has been used educationally in recent decades to approach the historical subject of the Holocaust and genocide more broadly. But can a traumatic and conflictual event be taught through a multisemic encounter between comics and literature? This study demonstrates the multi-layered possibilities that arise from such an endeavour.
Based on contemporary literature on teaching the Holocaust, this book is an innovative, interdisciplinary teaching methodology handbook for teachers and students who wish to approach it effectively in the classroom, but also for readers who love history, literature and comics.
